The cooperative movement in the Philippines is standing firm against the proposed taxation on cooperatives, as spearheaded by the Cooperative National Confederation of Cooperatives Party-list (COOP-NATCCO). On January 28, 2025, a large rally was held in front of the Department of Finance (DOF) to voice out strong opposition to the government's plan to impose taxes on cooperatives.
Among the many cooperatives support this protest is our Angat Pinoy Online Service Cooperative, which fully supports the movement to defend the rights and benefits of cooperatives nationwide. The protest highlighted the vital role that cooperatives play in uplifting marginalized sectors, providing economic opportunities, and fostering financial inclusion among Filipinos.
The cooperative sector argues that imposing taxes on cooperatives contradicts the essence of Republic Act No. 9520, also known as the Philippine Cooperative Code of 2008, which grants tax exemptions to registered cooperatives. The law recognizes cooperatives as socio-economic enterprises that empower members and communities by redistributing wealth and promoting self-sufficiency.
Leaders of COOP-NATCCO emphasized that taxing cooperatives would place an additional financial burden on small and medium-sized cooperatives that are already struggling with inflation and economic recovery. It would also discourage the growth of grassroots economic initiatives, affecting millions of cooperative members who rely on these organizations for livelihood and essential services.
During the rally, cooperative leaders, members, and advocates expressed their unity through speeches, banners, and petitions, urging the government to reconsider its position. COOP-NATCCO is calling on all cooperatives and their members to strengthen their collective voice and push for policies that protect, rather than hinder, cooperative development.
Angat Pinoy Online Service Cooperative encourages all cooperative members and supporters to stay informed, participate in advocacy efforts, and engage with policymakers to safeguard the cooperative sector from unjust taxation.
The cooperative movement remains committed to fostering economic democracy and financial empowerment for all Filipinos. This protest is just one step in a broader fight to ensure that cooperatives continue to serve as a pillar of inclusive growth in the Philippines.
